Full bibliographic records for materials in the Dodd Center stacks exist in the online catalogue Homer for the majority of books and serials in the NCLC, so author, title, keyword, subject, and other standard searches via Homer are possible. For the Levy and Boyson collections, however, minimal level cataloguing (without subject headings) was used for the Access databases created to provide control of the collections. These records are now available in Homer as well but without the headings necessary for effective subject searching.

With full cataloguing, due to the complexity of Library of Congress subject headings, it is usually recommended that patrons use keyword search techniques rather than the subject search keys. These are just a few of the hundreds of valid subject headings for various aspects of children’s literature, and the patron must keep in mind the many chronological, geographical and topical subdivisions allowed in the heading:

Children's literature, American--History and criticism--Theory, etc.
Children's literature, English--History and criticism--Theory, etc.
Children--Books and reading--English-speaking countries.
Children--Books and reading--United States.
Multiculturalism in literature.
Culture in literature.
Storytelling in literature.
