Billie M. Levy Travel and Research Grants and James Marshall Fellowship

The Northeast Children's Literature Collection at the University of Connecticut announces two travel/research grants. The Billie M. Levy Travel and Research Grant is an annual award ranging from $500 to $1200 for students, scholars, researchers, authors and illustrators to use materials in the Northeast Children's Literature Collection (www.nclc.uconn.edu). The James Marshall Fellowship is an award of $1500 for a promising author/illustrator to support the production a work of new children's literature through the use of materials in the Collection. Malka Penn Children's Book Collection on Human Rights for 2006

Michele Palmer of Storrs, Connecticut, has established the Malka Penn Children's Book Collection on Human Rights as part of the Northeast Children's Literature Collection at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. The books address issues such as racism and prejudice, war and conflict, and the Holocaust, and include picture books, young adult novels and non-fiction. The works will be on display in the McDonald Reading Room through August, 2006. The books represent fifteen of the best books for 2006. The books represent fifteen of the best books for 2005, chosen by Ms. Palmer and the curator for the Northeast Children's Literature Collection. There are 10 illustrated books and 5 chapter books. Ms. Palmer, who has written several children's books under the pseudonym Malka Penn, is also a volunteer on the University of Connecticut Libraries’ Exhibits Committee.
